Big budget ‘Hollywood’ films and blockbuster franchises are making it very difficult for the small low budget film industry to survive. The number of small/ midsize productions has fell from 37 to 30 according to the BFI (British Film Institute) – not seen since 2008! In contrast the £1.6 Bn Hollywood/ Blockbuster film market remain the same at 20 films produced in 2015. In the US only 9% (650 films) of the box office is from small/ medium budget films. The TV industry is also taking a portion of the Film industry with big budget companies such as Netflix creating their own films/ shows e.g. The Crown (£100 million budget). The investment in TV production by US companies such as Amazon and Netflix has imcreased from £252 million in 2013 to £500 million last year.
